Stray away from Spain’s ‘beaten track’ and uncover the country’s more authentic side, taking advantage of Braemar’s smaller size to delve deeper into one of the lesser-known, yet most rewarding, beautiful and diverse Spanish regions.

The first stop on your exploration of scenic Spain is La Coruña. Docking just 400 metres from the heart of this historic city means impressive landmarks such as the Galician Baroque-style Cornide Palace, the ancient Church of Santiago and the UNESCO-listed Torre de Hercules are all within easy reach. La Coruña is also your gateway to spectacular Santiago de Compostela – one of Christendom’s three global spiritual capitals – and its simply breathtaking cathedral. Then in the pretty Asturian city of Avilés, you’ll berth alongside the world-renowned Óscar Niemeyer International Centre – a ‘must-visit’ attraction during your day here. Once again you’ll be close to a selection of other highlights too, including the fine architecture of the Old Town and a number of traditional siderias where you can enjoy a glass or two of authentic Asturian sidra. Alternatively you could take a trip to Oviedo to marvel at the grand gothic-style cathedral and a number of UNESCO-listed sites; or tour to the Atlantico Botanical Garden, the only one of its type in Northern Spain.

Day to Day Itinerary:

Day 1: Southampton, United Kingdom: Depart Late PM

Following a flight from Dublin to Liverpool, you will be transferred to the port to board the Fred. Olsen Braemar where you will begin your journey.

Day 2: At Sea

Day 3: La Coruña, SpainEarly AM to Late PM

La Coruna is the capital of the province and a busy seaport situated in the Bay of Coruna.

The diverse architectural styles of La Coruna make this city an absolute delight for sightseeing. From the incredible medieval buildings and monuments to the stylish modernist houses that line the waterfront, La Coruna has something for everyone. The city also boasts an impressive seafront promenade, beautiful beaches and a host of attractions such as the Domus museum, the Casa del Hombre and Torre De Hercules – said to be the only Roman lighthouse in existence – which offers stunning views from the top of its 60-metre high tower.

Day 4: Aviles, Spain: Early AM to Late PM

A former maritime and farming town, the scenic city of Aviles is now one of Spain’s most important industrial centres, producing steel, iron and much more. The city centre is stylish and easy to navigate, with plenty of high street stores, pretty cafes and a number of museums and galleries to visit, while the nearby Old Town quarter is Aviles’ greatest attraction.

Largely pedestrianised, the Old Town of Aviles consists of several historic squares and plazas that are interlinked by a number of pretty streets and boulevards from centuries past. Home to some true architectural gems, the Old Town boasts a number of stunning historic buildings and monuments including the Camposagrado Palace, Palacio de Valdecarzana – Aviles’ sole example of civil medieval architecture – and the 13th and 14th century churches that are dotted around the city.

Day 5: Santander, Spain: Early AM to Late PM

The belle-époque elegance of El Sardinero aside, modern Santander is not the most beautiful of cities. A huge fire raged through the centre back in 1941, leaving little that’s old or quaint. But Cantabria’s capital is an engaging one, nonetheless, making the most of its setting along the northern side of the handsome Bahía de Santander. It’s a lively spot to spend a night or two, with fine urban beaches, busy shopping streets, a heaving bar and restaurant scene, plenty of surf, and some intriguing cultural attractions. It’s a popular summer holiday resort for Spaniards.

Day 6-7: Getxo (Bilbao), Spain: Early AM OVERNIGHT Early PM

The underrated Getxo in Northern Spain, is an attractive seaside location, and the access port for Bilbao. Getxo’s wonderful beaches, beautiful architecture and truly impressive monuments include the UNESCO-listed Vizcaya Bridge – the world’s oldest transport bridge.

The town’s Old Port area, Algorta, is situated at one end of the Ereaga Beach and is a popular spot to soak up the sun, enjoy the vibrant nightlife and take advantage of the exciting water sports. At Ereaga’s other end, delightful palaces and gardens can be found and explored.

Getxo is also perfectly placed for tours to nearby Bilbao, the largest city in the Basque country, and home to the world famous Guggenheim Museum, Museum of Fine Art and its stunning 14th century Gothic-style cathedral.
