Day to Day Itinerary:

Day 1: Genoa, Italy: Depart 18.00

On arrival in Genoa you will be transferred to the port to board MSC Splendida. The ship departs into the Mediterranean in the evening, setting sail for your first port of call.

Day 2: Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy: Arrive 07.00 Depart 18.00

Get drunk on history, architecture and sunshine!

The port city of Civitavecchia lies about an hour from Italy’s capital and is where your cruise liner will dock before taking lucky holiday-makers to the city of Rome.

Rome – where do we start? It is the ultimate vacation destination. There is perhaps no other city so crammed full of history, with layer upon layer of fabulous ruins, imperial temples…not to mention Etruscan tombs, early Christian churches, medieval bell towers, Renaissance palaces and baroque basilicas.

Day 3: At Sea:

Day 4: Heraklion, Crete, Greece: Arrive 12.00 Depart 18.00

Heraklion has superb fortifications, a fine market and atmospheric old alleys to visit when you alight from your MSC cruise. Virtually everything you’re likely to want to see lies within the north-eastern corner of the walled city. The massive Venetian walls, in places up to 15m thick, are the most obvious evidence of Heraklion’s history.

Day 5-6: Suez Canal Transit:

Along with the Panama Canal which followed some years later, the Suez Canal stands as a permanent tribute to the genius and vision of Ferdinand de Lesseps. Work begun in 1859, with thousands of labourers excavating some 75 million cubic metres of sand. Since its grand opening in 1869 (a ceremony which included an inaugural performance of Verdi’s Aïda), distances around the world have shrunk, with trade and travel transformed. Discovery makes her own transit, crossing the Great Bitter Lake and sailing beneath Egypt’s newest engineering achievement, the Suez Canal Bridge, one of the tallest suspension bridges in the world.

Day 7: Aqaba, Jordan: Arrive 08.00 Depart 18.00

It was more than 2,000 years ago that the Nabataean Arabs, Bedouin who came from Africa, created the fortress city of Petra. The two days spent in Aqaba allow one or two full days to explore this remarkable ancient city. As we walk down through the Siq – a narrow, naturally-formed gorge – we will be confronted with the spectacular Treasury. This is just the start of Petra and exploring this remarkable city. A visit is also available to Wadi Rum – a vast silent landscape of ancient bedrocks, pastel-coloured stretches of sandy desert and towering sandstone mountains. This was the scene of the exploits of Lawrence of Arabia in World War I and the setting for the epic David Lean film.

Day 8-12: At Sea

Day 13: Muscat, Oman: Arrive 08.00 Depart 18.00

Muscat is the official capital of modern Oman.

It offers plenty of history, an air of tradition and crammed between the mountains and the sea it has a distinctly exotic location. Its main sights include Al Jalali Fort and Al Mirani fort, Grand Mosque, Mutrah Souk, Bait az-Zubair Museum and Qasr Al Alam Royal Palace.

Day 14: At Sea:

Day 15: Doha, Qatar: Arrive 08.00 Depart 18.00

A cruise in the United Arab Emirates and Oman will introduce you to Doha, the country’s futuristic capital on the Persian Gulf. The city is preparing to host the 2022 World Cup, enhancing its already awesome skyline with new super modern skyscrapers.

The Aspire Tower in Doha (300 meters) dominates the skylines. It is the highest building of the country, whose shape is akin to a torch. This building is located near the city of sport, which has already hosted events such as the XII Pan Arab games and which will have a central role during the World Cup. Much of Doha, including places of worship such as the new mosque in the Qatar Faculty of Islamic studies, seems to be already in the future.

Day 16: Sir Bani Yas Is, U. Arab Emirates: Arrive 08.00 Depart 17.00

An enchanting stop on this MSC Cruise to the United Arab Emirates and Oman is Sir Bani Yas island. It has nothing to do with the hyper-technological progress which you will admire on your trip to the capital, Abu Dhabi.

On Sir Bani Yas, just like on the islands of Dalma and the six nearby Discovery Islands, an enormous nature reserve has been designated to species in danger of extinction, be they from the Arabic peninsula or from Africa.

In particular, on Sir Bani Yas you will be able to observe rare animals inside a protected area where the great majority of the animals, including giraffes, flamingos and cheetahs to name just a few, live freely.

During your cruise to Abu Dhabi, Sir Bani Yas is therefore is an opportunity to be seized to enjoy fun excursions or safaris in the wild, or to experience some of the exciting sports on offer.

And for those who choose MSC Cruises relaxation, the beaches and the facilities that this island offers, where everything aimed at sustainability, will ensure that you spend an unforgettable day of leisure.

Day 17-18: Dubai, U. Arab Emirates: Arrive 08.00 OVERNIGHT Depart 23.00

Stunning and sophisticated, opulent and affluent… Dubai is one of the world’s most dazzling destinations, a city-state that draws travellers for its heady mix of shopping…tempered with heritage, tradition and culture.

As your luxury MSC liner pulls into Dubai City, cruise passengers are greeted with a modern skyscraper skyline and the sight of the famous ‘sail-boat’ shaped, seven-starred Burj Al Arab hotel on its own island, off the coast.

Many passengers will be keen to experience Dubai’s world-class shopping facilities; strolling the many premium malls here, it is clear why Dubai is a shopping Mecca. Enjoy another shopping experience altogether in Dubai’s amazing Souk district; with its dedicated quarters for gold, spice, perfume, this bazaar is truly a feast for the senses.

Day 19: Abu Dhabi, U. Arab Emirates: Arrive 05.00

After your breakfast on board you will be transferred to the airport for your flight back to Dublin.
