Chances to marvel at two of Europe’s most spectacular cathedrals make for a memorable beginning and end to your romantic journey, while in between there are a plethora of incredible sights and experiences to uncover. Enjoy time ashore discovering the historical and architectural delights of charming towns and cities; and relax on board Brabant as she sails the breathtaking Middle Rhine Valley and only the most scenic areas of the magnificent Moselle Valley.
The exquisite Cathédrale Notre-Dame is a sight to behold in your first stop, Strasbourg. This is just one of many delights on show though; don’t miss the photogenic Kammerzell House and the half-timbered houses and pretty canals of the Petite France quarter too. Across the French-German border, the handsome German city of Speyer and its UNESCO-listed Romanesque Cathedral awaits you next, before a stop at Mannheim offers you the chance to tour to Heidelberg. This beautiful university town has inspired poets, artists and writers for centuries. A pause at Oberwesel, which is renowned for its remarkably well preserved medieval town wall, is then followed by a cruise through the enchanting Middle Rhine Valley. Look out for hillside fortresses, forests and vineyards, as well as a collection of spire-laden historic towns and villages dotted along the banks of the Rhine; then head ashore in Koblenz to perhaps visit the ancient Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, the Prussian Electoral Palace and the 13th century Alte Berg.
Brabant will then divert down the Moselle to Bernkastel-Kues – a route only navigable by smaller river boats. Bernkastel-Kues’ medley of half-timbered houses, welcoming wine taverns and stunning lush-green scenery beckons you ashore, before a very special daylight cruising experience follows. Spending the afternoon sailing by the fine vineyards and pretty towns of the Middle Moselle Valley will be simply unforgettable. The next day begins in Cochem, where the romantic squares and imposing Reichsburg Castle are among the highlights, and then another memorable afternoon will be spent taking in sensational river scenery. Your journey through the alluring Lower Moselle Valley will present views of yet more vineyards, castles and towns. As your cruise nears its conclusion, a call into Cologne will afford time to marvel at the remarkable exterior and interior of the city’s iconic twin-spired cathedral and explore the charming Old Town. There’s also an opportunity to uncover the artistic treasures of Düsseldorf before you head home.
Day to Day Itinerary:
Day 1: Basel, Switzerland:
Following a flight from Dublin to Zurich, you will be transferred to Basel to board the Fred. Olsen Brabant where you can settle in and explore the ship.
Often overlooked by those who fly straight to the larger, well-trodden cities of Zürich and Geneva, beautiful Basel is one of Switzerland’s – if not Europe’s – most underrated destinations. Situated in a scenic setting on the River Rhine between the borders of France and Germany and boasting an eclectic mix of sights and attractions, both historic and contemporary, this charming city is sure to enchant and inspire.
Day 2: Strasbourg, France:
Part beautifully preserved medieval gem, part unofficial capital of Europe and one of the most important modern cities on the continent; Strasbourg – the glorious capital of France’s beautiful Alsace region – is as cosmopolitan and captivating as they come. The city’s cultural centre is particularly appealing, with its eye-catching old and glittering European quarters boasting an array of diverse architectural treasures.
Day 3: Speyer & Mannheim, Germany:
Compact, picturesque and beautifully well-preserved, stunning Speyer always makes for a rewarding stop while cruising along the beautiful River Rhine. Easily explored on foot, the city is perfect for a few hours of relaxing sightseeing in the sunshine.
A small fishing village throughout the Middle Ages, Mannheim – situated at the confluence of the Rhine and Neckar rivers – didn’t become a city until the 17th century, when Frederick IV built the Friedrichsburg Fortress and laid the first streets and avenues here.
Day 4: Oberwesel, Cruising Middle Rhine Valley & Koblenz, Germany:
Seemingly untouched since the Middle Ages, Oberwesel is one of the finest examples of a medieval settlement to be seen anywhere in Europe. Spread along the west bank of the River Rhine in the spectacular, UNESCO-listed Rhine Gorge, the ‘town of towers and wine’ is renowned for its magnificent historic structures, stunning scenery and famous Riesling wine vineyards.
The enchanting Middle Rhine Valley – also affectionately known as the ‘Romantic Rhine Valley – is Germany at its finest. World renowned for its breathtaking, postcard-perfect scenery, the Middle Rhine features imposing cliffs and picturesque rolling hills, steep vineyards, historic landmarks including a collection of magnificent medieval castles and a string of picturesque riverside cities, towns and villages such as Bacharach, Boppard, St. Goar and Linz.
Situated at the famous ‘Deutsches Eck’ where the Rhine and Moselle rivers meet and the magnificent Hunsrück, Eifel and Westerwald mountain ranges converge, it’s no wonder Koblenz is considered one of the most picturesque cities in Germany. The appeal of Koblenz isn’t just skin-deep however; over 2,000 years of history and an abundance of cultural and historical monuments ensure this ancient city is always a memorable and rewarding stop on a German river cruise.
Day 5: Bernkastel-Kues & Cruising Middle Moselle Valley, Germany:
Known as the ‘heart of the Middle Mosel’, beautiful Bernkastel-Kues is an enchanting twin town spread along both the east and west banks of the River Mosel at the centre of the picturesque Mosel Valley. Set amongst a backdrop of stunning lush-green scenery and world-famous vineyards, including the revered Berkasteler Doctor, Bernkastel-Kues is best known for producing some of Europe’s finest and most expensive wines.
Revel in the resplendent scenery of Germany’s beautiful Middle Moselle Valley as you sail the many kinks and bends of one of the most spectacular sections of the River Moselle.
Day 6: Cochem & Cruising Lower Moselle Valley, Germany:
Although small, the fairytale-esque German town of Cochem is sure to make a big impression. Situated within the breathtaking Moselle Valley on one of the winding Moselle River’s seemingly endless hairpin bends, Cochem is one of Europe’s most charming and picturesque locations. Sailing here is always simply unforgettable, with views of unspoilt lush-green countryside to enjoy from your river boat; while in the town itself there are plenty of eye-catching sights to discover too.
With its beautiful, ever-changing landscape, which is marked by world-famous vineyards, imposing cliffs and steep hills, towering centuries-old castles and a string of postcard-perfect historic towns, the Lower Moselle Valley is widely considered the most picturesque section of the Moselle River.
Day 7: Cologne & Düsseldorf, Germany:
Situated on the Rhine River in the centre of the Rhine-Rhur region, charming Cologne is the beating heart of the beautiful Rhineland. Originally founded over 2,000 years ago by the Ubii tribe, Cologne was once the largest city in the Holy Roman Empire and served as a major trade route throughout the Middle Ages. In recent years the city has been extensively rebuilt and restructured, and is now one of the most important historical and cultural centres in Europe.
Dazzling Düsseldorf – the capital of the North Rhine-Westphalia state – is a vibrant modern metropolis situated on the banks of the beautiful Rhine River. A thriving economic centre, this stylish city is one of Germany’s largest, wealthiest and most populated; and renowned for its international media, creative and financial industries, cosmopolitan culture, buzzing nightlife and striking architecture.
Day 8: Düsseldorf, Germany:
You cruise into Düsseldorf on the final day of your river cruise and disembarkment will begin after breakfast. You will be transferred from the quay to the airport for your flight to Dublin.
